If you have found yourself in the midst of this pandemic suddenly working from home, I happen to be an expert at this (not an expert on pandemics – working from home …. just to be clear). While I’m not out working with other businesses creating beautiful content for their social media and websites or on select weekends covering weddings, you’ll find me at home, in my home office, editing, creating content, and doing all of the business things.
Working from home requires a lot of discipline (hello Netflix) and I’ve found that establishing a set of guidelines for myself is the only way to be productive and get my tasks done.
Here are a few tips for working from home:
Establish a morning routine
Yes, a morning routine. I’m a firm believer in morning routines and sticking to them. I’m a creature of habit and so doing the same thing each morning allows for me to set my day up with success early on. Get to bed at a reasonable time, set your alarm, and get up before the rest of the house is up (super important if you have kids and family at home during this time). I take some time to myself each morning with a cup (or two) of coffee, do some journaling and goal setting, create my to-do list for the day, and then hit the basement gym for a workout. My mind and body are both fueled at the start of the day.
Get showered, dressed, and hair and makeup
It’s tempting to stay in comfy pjs and a robe all day to work, but I’ve never been able to do this. Regardless of whether or not I leave my house or see anyone on the outside, I faithfully shower, get dressed in normal clothes, and do my hair and makeup every single day. This helps me to feel normal and it honestly lifts my spirits. If you haven’t done this yet, give it a try. I promise, you’ll feel like you can walk a runway …. especially if it’s been weeks since you’ve seen your makeup bag.
Give yourself grace
Working from home means working on your business AND working on tasks around the house – laundry that piles up, dishes in the sink, vacuuming … you get the point. Chances are, you won’t get EVERYTHING done every single day, so go easy on yourself and give yourself some grace. Set up your business tasks that need done and maybe one or two other house chores to tackle if you can get to them. If you really get into the blogging mode and don’t get to your pile of dishes, that’s okay! Getting that blog updated is a win in my book. In all honesty, give yourself some grace. Take your time. Set realistic goals. We can’t be SuperWoman at all times with everything. One task at a time, one day at a time.
We are all in this together … we’ll get through this together. In the meantime, get yourself on a routine, put on that face, and give yourself some grace.
